Scripture
“Now Elimelek, Naomi’s husband, died, and she was left with her two sons. 4 They married Moabite women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth. After they had lived there about ten years, 5 both Mahlon and Kilion also died, and Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband.” Ruth 1:3-5 (NIV)

Bitterness. It’s something that could easily take over our lives if we let it. One lie told about you. One phone call filled with devastating news. One betrayal by a trusted soul. Any of these things could lead you to feel like you’ve been abandoned by God. If He is for us, no one could be against us, right?

Naomi lost her husband. Then she lost her only sons. Talk about devastating circumstances that would cause anyone anguish. It was easy for her to blame God and let Him bear the brunt of her grief and pain. She didn’t understand why this happened and felt she could never love nor be loved again. Yet she was loved. By her daughter-in-law, Ruth.

Through adversity and difficulty, Ruth gave Naomi her undivided love. A healing gesture that melted away Naomi’s bitterness and led her to a future she never imagined for herself.

Sometimes we cannot see the road ahead when troubles arise. God is always working on our behalf, even when we cannot see His work. Even when His grace comes in the form of a beloved companion who walks with us through the valley of the shadows.
