Scripture
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” James 1:2-3 (NIV)

What did that verse in James just say? To consider the trials we face in life pure joy? Yes. Yes, that’s exactly what it says.

Scripture doesn’t promise we’ll experience endless happiness all the days of our lives simply because we live as good and faithful servants. For those who follow God, joy is just one in a list of attributes we are to show towards others, and even to ourselves.

The Bible says the fruits of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. How do we find joy in the midst of tsunami waves of anguish, sorrow and devastation?

We can experience the deepest of sorrows yet realize that our joy in God—our faith in God—gives us strength. When tears fall as we confide about our deepest pain, there is peace to be found not walking through it alone. Sadness can also coexist with the joy of lifting our cares to a loving God.
