“Ugh, Mom! Stop telling me what to do!” If you have children, you’ve heard this phrase over and over. We give our children rules and guidelines to follow for a variety of reasons: safety, kindness, respect, etc. In the eyes of our children we are often seen as rulers, telling them what to do because we want to rule over them, when in fact, the heart of the rules we have set forth is to keep those around us safe, loved and in the end, closer to Jesus. We want to guide them as they grow and learn to continue to follow our Father. Oftentimes God’s rules resonate the same way with us. We try to twist His rules to allow our sinful nature the indulgence it yearns for. Even at our best we are inherently selfish.
But in this verse, the Psalmist asks for God to give him the wisdom to understand His rules better. The Psalmist knows deep down that God loves him and wants only what is good for him. Remember that you are a child of God. And like other children, we may not always understand our parent’s rules, but we know they are given to us with love. There truly is nothing like the love of our Father; even when we can’t quite understand it, we can always find peace in His guidance and look to Him for wisdom in all that we do.
