Scripture
“My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” Psalm 42:2 (NIV)

They say “seeing is believing,” so how can we believe in a person we can’t see or haven’t met? It can be easy to lose sight of God, especially during difficult times in our lives. Lent is no exception; making sacrifices in the name of God is no cakewalk when questions about Him remain. In fact, we may find ourselves more irritable without the cell phone we gave up or hungry for the meat we cannot eat on Fridays when we feel distant or unsure of who God is.

So, what’s it all for? If we cannot yet see or meet God, why are we sacrificing so many of our favorite things for Him?

God is always with us. Even though we can’t see Him, He sees us. Even though we think we haven’t met Him, we have. God touches every part of our lives—He is the goodness we experience in return for the worth we bring to the world. He knows the sacrifices we make in His name and never takes us for granted.

Though we may feel far from God at times in our lives, perhaps even during Lent, we are incredibly close to Him. Our sacrifices show God that we are willing to give up what He has given us because God matters above all else.

So, what’s all this sacrificing for? It is to demonstrate to God—and to ourselves—that we believe in Him and see Him with our spiritual eyes, that we love Him though we haven’t met Him and that we give praise to Him for all He has done for us.
