Scripture
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us... ” Hebrews 12:1 (NIV)

Perseverance.

It’s what we encourage children (and some adults) to have when they face a plate of Brussels sprouts. It’s that last bit of endurance runners muster from within to cross the finish line. The dog that’s convinced they must protect their family from the mail carrier believes this is their moment of all moments to save their home. Those examples of pressing on when faced with difficulties are easy to understand. What about when all eyes are upon us when we fail? When we’ve felt the sting of defeat, why keep on going?

It takes guts and courage to keep going when life knocks you down. Our hearts and spirits can be laden with pain, sadness or even guilt when we falter. To suffer through those feelings in front of others can be difficult to manage. How many of us would rather keep our sorrows private than have them on display? Everyone watching—judging—wondering how we muscle through when faced with adversity.

Jesus persevered. He was praised, then ridiculed. Exalted, then condemned. A table-flipping changemaker and a sacrificial peacemaker. He did all of this to run and finish the race marked out for Him. He took on our sins from the cross, with all eyes watching, so that we may have life everlasting.

When the path before seems too thorny to continue, remember the one who donned a crown of thorns and pressed on.
