Scripture
“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:8-9 (NIV)

Confession is good for the soul, but it can be uncomfortable. Spilling all the details of our shortcomings and sin doesn’t sound like a good time. Sweeping our faults under the rug seems easier than admitting we’re not perfect. Yet as believers, we know ignoring our faults is not okay.

Confession is a necessary part of atonement. Although God is already fully aware of what we’ve done and where we’ve been, revealing our true selves to Him is a critical part of our faith story.

We all fall short of God’s glory, yet God remains compassionate. He provides unlimited forgiveness even when we don’t deserve it. When we divulge our sins to God, it’s a way of drawing closer with Him. Admitting we need a Savior to wipe away our misdeeds is not a sign of weakness. It’s a strength to admit we cannot forgo this life alone.

If secrets are holding you captive, if the lies you’ve spun are catching up with you, or if conviction is keeping you up at night, it’s time to make it right with God. Struggle no more with what’s weighing down your spirit.

Confess.
