Scripture
“‘Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.’ 10 So Joshua ordered the officers of the people: 11 ‘Go through the camp and tell the people, “Get your provisions ready. Three days from now you will cross the Jordan here to go in and take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving you for your own.”’” Joshua 1:9-11 (NIV)

In the 1939 classic film The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy and her friends embark on a mission. Their reward? The great and powerful Oz promises to give them their hearts’ desires. There was only one thing Cowardly Lion requested: courage. Seems a little strange coming from a guy billed as “King of the Jungle.” Yet that was the only thing he wanted. Some gumption to stand tall and be courageous because fear was ruling his life.

Joshua had some big shoes to fill. As Moses’ successor, he was charged with the remaining journey to the Promised Land. Can you imagine the pressure on his shoulders? I imagine there being leadership meetings to discuss the plan, to pump Joshua up for the road ahead, and perhaps some self-doubt in the quieter moments he had alone.

There in the midst, God was reminding Joshua that no matter where Joshua went, He would be with him. That fear and discouragement were forbidden from making him believe otherwise. But Joshua had to believe it for himself and stand firm in God’s promises.

God is your biggest cheerleader in life. He wants you to walk boldly in faith. Grab onto the courage He’s given you and go forth in love and wisdom.
