If we were perfect, we wouldn’t need Jesus.
The responsibility to be all things, to all people, in all circumstances with flawless precision sounds like way too much work and responsibility, doesn’t it? There is no way we could ever attain or sustain excellence at that level. That’s why God sent Jesus to walk the earth.
This verse in Colossians tells us that Christ’s sacrifice on the cross canceled our indebtedness to God. Jesus took on our sins as payment in full to God for all of our imperfections. He loved us before we knew Him. He paid the premium—on our behalf—because no amount of money or good deeds would ever be enough. Not just for the small things—like rolling through stop signs or telling “white lies” that seem to harm no one—but the big stuff too. Jesus’s death provides freedom for all those who believe.
Today, make a pledge: no more chasing perfection or trying to live up to unattainable standards in our friendships, occupations, marriages or as parents. We can be honest with ourselves that we will continually fall short and struggle to measure up to the standards of this world. Friends, that’s not the point anyway. The goal for our lives should be how we put God first, the way we serve others and how we follow in the footsteps of Jesus.
