Life is fragile, and we don’t always like being reminded of that. We fill our days with work, routines and distractions, as if we’ll have endless tomorrows. But Psalm 39 pulls us back to reality: our lives are short, like a breath. Even those who seem untouchable are here only for a moment.

At first, that can sound sobering, maybe even unsettling. But it’s actually a gift. If life is short, then it matters deeply how we spend it. We can stop chasing what won’t last—status, stuff, approval—and start focusing on what will. Loving God. Loving people. Living with eternity in mind.

This verse isn’t meant to scare us into urgency. It’s meant to refocus us on what matters most. Because when we live as if life is a breath, we stop wasting it. We start giving it away in love, in kindness, in faith.

So today, pause and ask yourself: Am I investing my breath in what matters most?
