Scripture
“Jesus looked at him and loved him. ‘One thing you lack,’ he said. ‘Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’”

Success.
Money.
Youth.
Achievement.

There’s nothing wrong with any of these things. But what if they mean everything to you? What if God asked you to give them all up and follow Him?

Jesus had such a conversation with an extremely successful, rich young man—he was all that and then some. Jesus asked the man to sacrifice three very important things: sell all of his stuff, give the money to the poor, and give up his day-to-day lifestyle to follow God. I wonder if there was a point where this young man could get on board with the idea. Perhaps selling things he didn’t need was the eBay precursor, and this young man could get behind that. Give the money away? Okay, that may have been hard to swallow but something he would do.

Follow Jesus? Like, forever?

Was that the breaking point?

When we honor God, above all else, that’s when we lack for nothing. Treasuring the things of this world is not what gains entrance into the kingdom of heaven. Depend on God for all things—always. You can accumulate riches and awards while seeking to retain your youth, yet God is waiting for a relationship with you. While acquiring everything, do not lack the one thing of greatest importance: a relationship with Jesus.
