Scripture
“Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” 1 John 3:18 (NIV)

We use the word “love” a lot. We love our morning latte, Taco Tuesdays and that new binge-worthy show everyone is raving about. Love is a term used fast and loose in today’s world. A blanket description of when we feel those warm fuzzies holding a new puppy, adoration for someone we hold in high esteem or a level of devotion toward something. Yet love is more than a word; it’s truth in action.

We’re reminded in the Book of John that love isn’t all talk. Love is what we show others—to God. Making promises can never hold a candle to demonstrating love. Your best friend appreciates your words of encouragement, yet she needs you to hold her hand and listen. You constantly tell your children how much they mean to you, but when did you last show interest in what they’re passionate about? You believe your husband knows that you adore him, but can you remember the last time you were slow to anger and quick to give empathy? The truth within our actions matters more than our words. When faced with a moment to show you care, are you crossing a good deed off your to-do list, or are you invested in being the hands and feet of Jesus in the lives of others?

God’s love for us is evident beyond His words in the Bible. He shows up even when we feel we don’t deserve second chances. He demonstrates compassion for others. His most extraordinary act of devotion was sacrificing His only son so we might live in eternity. Today, consider all the ways you can put your love in motion—make it a verb to make the most impact.
