Words matter.
Our language has the power to build up others or tear them down. The problem is that many times we do not realize the weight of what we say. It may seem harmless to leave a snarky comment on the internet. After all, they’re the ones who put out the content for others to see, right? It might be just you and your best friend catching up over coffee, and it’s safe to tell her anything. Yet, did you need to spill the tea about a mutual friend who told you something in confidence that was not yours to share?
When we follow Jesus, we are made new. Old habits—like gossip—should fall away to make room for the attributes He has called us to emulate in the world. Using unwholesome talk is not how we show others what following God looks like. Words that add no value have no place in our vocabularies.
Rather than bring harm, strive for your words to bring healing. There is a cornucopia of words we can use to speak life into others. They should be helpful and empowering and add value to those who hear them.
As you gear up for the day ahead, ask God to show you who needs to hear words full of love and life. Ask Him to keep your conversations pleasing to Him and reflect the meditations of a heart like His. Pray for wisdom as you grace others with loving words today.
