Scripture
“Jesus wept.” John 11:35 (NIV)

Lazarus was beloved by Christ. When he fell ill, Lazarus’s sisters called upon the Messiah to return and heal their dying brother. By the time Jesus arrived, Lazarus had passed away. Mary fell to Christ’s feet saying, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” Though He knew what was to come, Jesus was moved by her grief. Standing in front of Lazarus’s tomb, Jesus wept.

It’s the shortest verse in the Bible. Two simple words reveal the heart of our Savior and the compassion He holds for our suffering.

As believers in Christ, we are guaranteed eternal life. However, the time we spend on earth is not promised to be easy. Through it all, Christ weeps with us. His heart breaks for our brokenness, and He carries our pain as His own.

Jesus lifted Lazarus from the tomb. Jesus lifts us from our death. The heart of our Savior provides us with comfort and an example of how to love one another and our God.
