Scripture
“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” Proverbs 15:22 (NIV)

Decisions, decisions…

When you need counsel, where do you turn first? Not to the person you trust least, right? You want the ear of the person you trust most. Always turn to God first. As our Wonderful Counselor, He’s already well aware of your situation and is there to lean on. After Him, who’s next?

It can be a challenge to ask for advice. There’s a difference between someone telling you what you need to hear and what you want to hear.

It would be easy to call your best friend and ask if you should go to lunch or if you should run much-needed errands. She’s going to be cheeky and tell you every single time that lunch with her should be your biggest priority. But when you call her to ask for advice on the big things—the game changers—she listens to you, ponders your situation, then offers perspective. She’s your go-to because she is Godly and wise counsel. She also gets you, understands you and loves you unconditionally.

Are you going to ask her to advise you on what type of cold medicine would work best for your daughter? You may ask which brand her children take, but it’s usually a question you reserve for your doctor, nurse or pharmacist. They are your wise counsel in that arena.

Reap the benefits from seeking out advice. Learn from those who’ve blazed the trails before you. It’ll help you swerve away from mistakes they made when in your shoes. The guidance you receive doesn’t have to be followed to the letter. Listen with an open heart, think it through, then choose wisely what path you will take. If you have to reverse course or change direction, that’s okay. Remember Jonah? He had to do that too.
