Scripture
“Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.” 1 Timothy 4:16 (NIV)

We like things that are good to us: clear skies, clear roads and even clear relationships. We also like it when life is good to us: work is on a roll, bank accounts are in the positive and we score the winning serve in our tennis league. Without keeping a close watch on our priorities, these good things can quickly become our first allegiance.

Anything we spend an excessive amount of time doing—social media, fantasy football, mindless shopping—can become God-like in our lives. When something takes hold of feelings and favor, and interrupts healthy routines, it’s not a good situation to be in. Obsession taken too far can lead us into worry, fear and anxiety that harm our minds, attitudes and souls.

Keep watch. Guard your heart and mind from less-than-stellar influences, and establish God first and foremost in your life. Make your relationship with Him priority number one. Pray regularly. Worship thoughtfully. Seek Him daily. Spending time reading scripture will bring you closer to the One who is always good to us and who keeps watch over our hearts.
