Remember when we were kids and our parents would bring us a warm cup of milk to help put us to sleep? The thought of sitting in bed with a cup of milk in the comfort of our mom’s embrace brings cozy feelings to our hearts.

As it turns out, warm milk before bed has come back into the limelight. But does it help us sleep better? Surprisingly, it does. Milk contains tryptophan and melatonin, natural substances that help your body fall asleep.

If you’re struggling to fall asleep, making a comforting cup of Moon Milk–milk with added herbs and spices–before bed could help ease your body into a good night’s rest. Let it take you back to those nights as a kid when you put on new pajamas and your mom read a bedtime story.

It can be helpful to use making Moon Milk as a habit starter as it could be the beginning of your bedtime routine. Coming into the night with a mindset of, “Now that I’m making this, it’s time to relax and turn off for the evening.” Associating warm milk with sleep can further help our bodies adjust and mentally prepare for sleep.

The common ingredients in moon milk are:
  • 1 cup of milk of choice, even non-dairy milk will work like almond or soy
  • 1 Tb. maple syrup or honey
  • 1 tsp. butterfly pea flower powder
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp. Ashwagandha powder (has properties that help calm the brain)
We can mix and match these ingredients by whisking them in a saucepan over some heat to create a moon milk that is unique to our personal taste preference.
