Jesus had quite a day.
In the verses before Mark 4:39, we see Him teaching massive crowds along the shoreline. If you’ve ever enjoyed the beach during peak travel time, you can imagine the large groups dotting the sand, bobbing and weaving to hear and catch a glimpse of the Great Teacher from Galilee. Hours of stories, fielding questions and “being on” is taxing, right? It’s no wonder that as Jesus and His disciples made their way across the waters, we learn that He was beyond exhausted and hit the hay.
While Jesus slept, a storm overcame their craft with waves so violent that water rushed into the boat. His team of twelve was overcome with fear for their lives. At the time, the Coast Guard wasn’t a thing, nor were life rafts. The only person they could rely on to save them from sinking was Jesus, who slept while the boat tossed and turned. Who can blame them for wondering how He could sleep through the squall that threatened their lives? Let’s be honest: They had a long day, too, working security and crowd control. All they wanted was a peaceful boat ride. And so, they woke Him.
Jesus asked them why they were frightened. Where was their faith? And just like that he ordered the wind and waves to cease, and so they did.
Do you have faith that Jesus will calm the storms in your life? Can you rely on Him to work while you rest safely in His arms? When the whirlwinds of life meet you at sea, know that the One who calms the wind and waves can quiet the storms in your world. He is at work to provide you with safe passage—always.
