Scripture
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” Colossians 3:23 (NIV)

Working to put money in the bank can be exhausting. It’s just pennies on the dollar of the C-suite’s cut, but you put so much time and energy into the work. For what? To struggle to pay the light bill? To tell your children they can’t get that new toy or go on that field trip? It’s unfair.

Those human masters, the supervisors and executives who undervalue your time and contribution, are not who you work for. Sure, they cut the check, but they don’t have authority over your life. Whatever you do—push carts, perform brain surgery—work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord. Don’t put in less effort just because you feel unappreciated. Pour your heart into the people and projects around you. Show coworkers and bosses the Spirit that dwells inside you through your words and actions.

There will be days when your heart dwells on the injustice of it all. But someday we will see the work of our hands build something greater than a profitable venture—we’ll see them build God’s kingdom here on earth. That is something worth working for.
