Friends are important. They laugh with us, encourage us when things seem challenging and comfort us in life’s valleys. As believers, we are called to lift one another up, yet how many of us have a girlfriend circle who’ll answer our plea when we need prayer? Not the obligatory, “I’ll be praying for you.” I’m talking about the down on their knees, in the trenches, interceding on your behalf kind of friends: a powerful prayer team.
Having girlfriends—sisters in Christ—extends beyond superficial relationships and pleasantries: they get down to business. They watch over us and one another and speak truth during the moments it’s needed most. These are your go-to girls who will never forsake you, who will love you through the darkest times and help you reach toward your Heavenly Father when the swell of brokenness is too much to handle alone. They’re also cheerleaders. They see your successes and mountain-top moments as wins, not moments of envy.
Sometimes, we just need a friend to listen. Other times, we need a warrior to walk alongside us. If you have friends like that in your life, hold on to them, love them and let them know how much their encouragement means. If you’re seeking sisters of faith, begin by praying and asking God to place them in your life. Join a Bible study or women’s ministry, or find activities that forge friendship opportunities.
Maybe you’ve been hurt by female friendships in the past, and it seems easier to build walls than to let someone into your life. Sister, today is a new day. Step out in faith and ask God to send you the friend He knows you need because we were not created to do life alone—it takes a village.
