Scripture
“But someone will say, ‘You have faith; I have deeds.’ Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.” James 2:18 (NIV)

Gardeners are thrilled when spring has sprung. They long for more daylight and warmer weather during winter. Once those blessed with a green thumb stand face-to-face with overgrown fields, long-forgotten mounds of soil and remnants of roots and weeds, they don’t duck for cover. They pull up their sleeves and jump right in. This is their calling.

People who love to dig in the dirt aren’t fearful of the work ahead. The countless hours spent tilling, toiling and sowing are a means to reap their hard-earned harvest later. They can envision the fruits of their labor. What if we adopted this same go-get-em attitude when God calls us to serve Him? Imagine if farmers dismissively ignored their fields, saying, “Eh…too much work.” Don’t run from the task set before you. Where you see a need—an empty field—envision a plot ripe with opportunity.

When you experience a tug at your heartstrings to help others, that’s the Holy Spirit’s nudge. Be fearless yet prayerfully plan. Seek counsel. Then get busy leading a teen mom Bible study, shuttling the elderly to appointments, expanding your family through the gift of adoption—whatever your calling may be.

Grab your gardening gloves, prepare the soil, plant the seeds, rip out those encroaching weeds and watch God’s love bloom. It’s amazing what happens when God calls and we obediently show up ready to work.
