Scripture
“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? 8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. 9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.” Psalm 139:7-10 (NIV)

Hagar fled on foot through a rocky desert. She made it across dry river beds and rolling dunes in a desperate escape. A desert spring appeared in the distance, so the girl stopped to find refuge from the heat. Her mind instantly flooded with painful memories. Unable to bear children, Hagar’s owner—Sarah—had married the young servant to the family’s patriarch in hopes she would conceive a child for their bloodline. However, when Hagar became pregnant, Sarah was filled with jealous rage. The mistress began to mistreat Hagar, so the girl fled to the only place Sarah couldn’t find her.

As Hagar recounted these misfortunes and realized her impending peril, the angel of the Lord appeared to her. Filled with joy and comfort, the young girl exclaimed, “You are the God who sees me. I have now seen the One who sees me.”

In the moment where Hagar felt most afraid, she received comfort from the Lord. When she was lost in the desert, God saw her. When she needed Him most, God showed up.

Hagar’s story serves as a powerful reminder that there is nowhere we can go that God is not already there. He sees us in every height, depth and corner of the universe. He has written our names on the palm of His hand. When it feels like there is nowhere to run, our merciful and loving Savior opens His arms wide.
