Scripture
“But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” Matthew 5:44-45 (NIV)

Let’s be honest with one another. Who really wants to love anyone who’s wronged them? It would feel much better to tell others how they betrayed you or someone you love. Maybe send them to the Isle of Misfit Toys. Ignore them and pretend they no longer exist. Create a plan of retribution. If we are followers of Jesus, none of these are options. The only option is love.

Love your enemies. It’s not a suggestion or something to consider. It’s a command. Even when we are deeply wounded, mistreated or offended.

Why?

Grief falls on our foes’ lives just as it does on ours. The sun rises and sets during everyone’s day. Most importantly, we aren’t always easy to love when we wallow in our own folly, yet God still does. When resentment moves into your heart, it can swallow and consume you. If we let that roost in our souls, where is there room for love?

Pray for your enemies. Wish them no harm. Harbor no resentment. It’s what is least expected by the one you’re at odds with, yet absolutely the outcome anticipated by God.
