“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things." Philippians 4:8 (NIV)

He was imprisoned when Paul wrote this letter to the Philippians. Who would blame him for grumbling about being in prison? And yet he took this opportunity to look past his worldly circumstances. He chose to encourage his brothers and sisters in Christ. In this verse, Paul lays the framework for getting your mind off what’s going wrong and focusing on what’s right.

When you guard your heart and mind by centering your thoughts on what’s noble and lovely rather than what’s false and hurtful, a peace that passes all understanding comes from above. It’s why you can hold on, even by a thread, when life tries to spin out of control. God’s peace is why you miss loved ones who’ve left this earth, yet know they rest easy in heaven. When the world laughs at you for doing what’s right, the good vibe in your heart is an assurance from God that you chose wisely.

Spending time with God helps calibrate our minds and souls to seek the truth. And what is true, friend, is that the law of God is fulfilled when we are devoted to Him. We can choose today where our focus lies. Is yours locked onto the world’s craziness or fixated on the One who emulates love without limits?
