Scripture
“Then he said to them, ‘My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.’” Matthew 26:38 (NIV)

It’s so hard to fathom Jesus needing anyone or anything, isn’t it? He’s Jesus, Son of God––which is an awesome lineage to have––so He had everything going for Him. Yet, sometimes, we forget that Jesus was both man and God in the flesh. He had a divine nature and a human nature. In this chapter of Matthew, Jesus is in the Garden of Gethsemane, anguished and distressed over what’s to come: His abandonment and death on the cross.

Before He walked that road to Calvary, Jesus wanted the companionship of those closest to Him. Peter, James and John were like brothers to Jesus. He loved all the apostles, but these men were His go-to guys. They stood in the gap and prayed for and with their Savior. When Jesus was in the depths of despair, these were the people He wanted with Him as He walked in the valley of the shadow of death. Jesus’s soul was overwhelmed. He could not face the night alone, so he called upon those He trusted to be near Him, watch over Him and not leave His side.

When we need someone to stand in the gap with us, God implores us to reach out to other believers for strength and courage. Their support lifts us up because we cannot do it all independently. We weren’t meant to live a life of solitude. We are called to companionship: to humbly call out to our sisters in Christ when we need help, just like Jesus did.
