Two copper coins. All she had to live on. That’s what a poverty-stricken widow tithed while those around her gave from a place of wealth. Jesus took note of her sacrificial giving and called it to the attention of others. It’s not because she gave more than anyone else. Jesus wanted the well-off to notice a widow’s sacrifice. She didn’t contribute from her leftover funds after buying groceries. Nor her rainy-day stash of coins. This widow gave everything.
Obedience to God shouldn’t be a hard thing to grasp. When we give our children a task, our expectation is for it to be completed immediately. And that’s what this woman did without worry of what would happen tomorrow. She didn’t consider the light bill. Her thoughts didn’t mull over her rent payment. She submitted to God and trusted that He would fulfill any and all of her needs.
Perhaps it wasn’t her first rodeo. Maybe she’d already experienced God’s provision a multitude of times, yet this time, Jesus was there to show others how it should be done.
