There are two types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation involves engaging in a behavior because it is personally rewarding, while extrinsic motivation occurs when we engage in an activity to earn a reward or avoid punishment. What you want to do doesn’t always line up with what you have to do, but we’re here to help.
Ways to stay motivated
Start small
You may dread hours of uninterrupted work, so break your day down into smaller segments and make tasks easier to handle. Start with simple tasks you can complete quickly to build momentum. Instead of saying, “I have to work all morning,” say, “I’m going to work on this project for 1 hour, then I will go to the staff meeting at 10, and then it will be time for lunch.”
Stay positive
When is procrastination the easiest? When you’re in a bad mood. Happiness increases productivity. Staying optimistic will keep you on the right track to staying motivated. And don’t forget to celebrate progress!
Reward yourself
Rewards feel good, penalties feel bad. Looking forward to a reward, however small, can keep you motivated towards progress. Even something as simple as taking a break to appreciate the progress you’ve made can help keep you motivated.
Be creative
Have fun with what you’re doing—it’ll make getting through whatever you have to do easier. For example, instead of just doing the same workout routine everyday, switch it up from week to week and maybe throw in a class or two.
Stay focused
Remind yourself of your responsibilities. Remember that you have to get it done before you move on. Never put off until tomorrow what can be done today.
Self-motivation promotes positivity and discipline, benefitting you in the long run. Getting things done can help relieve a lot of stress and give you more time for yourself. Push yourself to stay motivated to keep getting better!
