Scripture
“So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife.” Genesis 16:3 (NIV)

It’s not uncommon to return to what we know: Taco Tuesdays, the same parking spot at the grocery, on Wednesdays we wear pink…

That’s not always a good thing, though. Just ask Sarah.

Sarah––known in Genesis as Sarai––seemed to be a get-it-done kind of woman. That included helping God with His promise of a lineage beyond her wildest dreams. Does that drive and determination feel familiar?

Sarah’s patience with God was threadbare. She was heartsick that her prayers for a child went unanswered, her pleading to God was wrought with pain and she felt shame that she was not yet a mother. That’s hard stuff––waiting for God to move. We can all relate to it in some form. We can also connect to Sarah’s determination to secure what she wanted. Whether it’s that corner office, a swoon-worthy home remodel or perhaps a child of our very own, our usual determination and drive should get us over the finish line. We tend to return to the patterns we think will lead us to accomplish everything.

But do they, and should we?

What if we left room for God to do His thing? What if we did the work and finished the race as good and faithful servants without thinking we could outmaneuver God’s handiwork? Our charge should be to ask, “God, how can I faithfully get to the place You promised to me?”

Let your new familiar be seeking God first and then getting out of His way. You’ll be amazed by what happens when you do!
