King Ahab: one of the evilest kings to rule Israel. His wife Jezebel? When you think of a spouse that’s a good personality match for their partner, she was it. Jezebel was right up there alongside Ahab in the sinister department. Maybe even worse.
Jezebel took pleasure in plotting the demise of anyone who preached the word of God. She was all about Baal and made it her mission to introduce this false god as the one true entity for Israelites to worship. She was greedy, forged documents, lied constantly and used her womanly skills to convince others to do her bidding. To call her ruthless seems like an understatement.
Jezebel’s deeds caught up with her eventually. Her husband, son and priests of Baal died at the hand of God. Even though she knew God was real, and even perhaps the one true God, she was too far gone in her web of deception to repent, refusing to admit what she could see with her own eyes. She was of the world, in the world, and urged her husband at his own demise to do what she wanted—right or wrong.
It’s not too late to turn away from “false gods” screaming for your attention: comparison, gossip, greed or even the pursuit of youth. God has called us to leave these things behind and focus our energy on what is true, pure, noble and lovely. Remember, as believers, we are to be in the world yet not of the world, always keeping our eyes away from distractions and on the one true God.
