Avoid Crib Chaos
Having a secure sleep space is essential. Make sure to always place your baby on their back, and avoid soft bedding, pillows or stuffed animals in their crib. Also, having a firm mattress with a fitted sheet goes a long way toward reducing risks and making sure your little one sleeps soundly. Safe sleep results in sweet dreams!
No Germs Allowed
Newborns have delicate immune systems, so they need a peaceful, hygienic environment to thrive. Since your hands are a big part of your baby’s world, make handwashing a must before you or anyone else handles them. Politely avoid letting visitors who are sick or have poor hygiene hold your baby. This simple habit can go a long way in keeping your little one healthy!
Less Can Be More
Feeding should feel natural, so trust your baby’s cues. Whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, allow your baby to set the pace. Don’t force them to finish a bottle or stick to a rigid schedule if they’re not hungry. Trusting their natural cues leads to a more enjoyable and relaxed feeding time!
Not Too Hot, Not Too Cold
Comfort is key, so make sure your baby is dressed for the weather. Newborns can’t regulate their body temperature as well as adults, so it’s important to dress them in layers that you can easily add to or remove. A good rule of thumb? Dress them in one more layer than you would wear. Keep an eye out for signs of discomfort, like fussiness, or sweaty or cold hands, and adjust accordingly.
Keep It Calm
Know that newborns thrive in calm, soothing environments. Although your home may be filled with bright lights, loud noise and plenty of activities, it’s important not to bombard your newborn with those. Instead, create a peaceful space with soft lighting and quiet moments for restful naps.
No Shaking, Please
Never shake your baby. Even gentle shaking can cause serious harm, including brain damage or even death. Babies have delicate necks and brains, and shaking can lead to Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS). Feeling overwhelmed? Place your baby in a safe spot and take a moment to calm down. Rather than shaking, try gentle rocking or checking if they need something.
No Burp, No Peace
Burping your baby helps release trapped air and prevents discomfort. Try to keep your baby calm during feedings to help prevent gulping air. During and after feeding, gently pat their back until they start burping. If they seem fussy or squirmy during feeding, pause for a burp break to help them settle down. A happy tummy makes for a happy baby!
Every step of this journey is a learning experience, and it’s perfectly okay to make mistakes along the way. By avoiding these seven common no-nos, you’re setting yourself and your baby up for success. Remember to trust your instincts and know that you’re not alone in this wonderful journey called motherhood—you’ve got this!
