1The LORD had said to Abram, ‘Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. 2I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. 3I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.’ 4So Abram went, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran.” Genesis 12:1-4 (NIV)

God made Abraham (previously known as Abram in earlier scriptures) a considerable promise. After all the rebellion God experienced at the beginning of Genesis—that apple incident in the Garden of Eden, Cain and his brother, Noah and the flood followed by the Tower of Babel—He goes in a different direction. His eye is on one man and his wife: Abraham and Sarah. A couple that seems unlikely to be called upon to create a lineage of grand proportions.

The Bible tells us that Sarah was unable to have children. Not only that, but she and Abraham were also in their golden years. Yet God, who dreams bigger dreams than we could ever dream for ourselves, makes a proclamation to the pair—one of hope and possibility in a world filled with chaos and problems.

God told Abraham to pack up all their things and move on out. He tells him to leave his land, extended family and father’s house. God wants Abraham to depend on Him solely and prove his loyalty by severing these ties that made him who he is. So, what was in it for Abraham that he would give up everything for the One True God?

God pledged to reveal a land reserved just for Abraham and his descendants. If that wasn’t enough, there’s another promise: His children will become a great nation. Not just one child but children. This blessed assurance means life, measured success, a name known to all and a family to call his own.

God never gave up on his creation. Abraham and Sarah were proof of this and proof that it’s never too late. No matter what the world says, we are never too far gone for God to do something glorious through us.
