Scripture
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” James 1:22 (NIV)

“Actions speak louder than words.” You’ve heard that phrase a time or two in your life. Sometimes we’ve said it to our kids to correct or motivate them. Other times, we’ve been on the receiving end, which can sting a little, right? Maybe it hurts because the truth and weight of the words are accurate.

We can promise our friend profusely that we’ll drop her sick daughter off a gift and, later, find a million reasons why we couldn’t fit it into our schedule. We can tell our husband we love him yet can’t be bothered to hear about his weekend fishing trip. We can tell our local food pantry we’ll be there every Friday, but not this Friday and not the one after that, because that’s mani-pedi time.

Again—actions speak louder than words.

The Bible is filled with examples of God showing—not just telling—His children about His devotion. The biggest? He sent His Son to lay down His life for ours. With that example of ultimate sacrifice, is it too much to ask that we also lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters in service and love?

Defying our selfish wants and desires—putting others’ needs before ours—is love in action. Telling someone you care about them is lovely. Showing them is a good deed that reverberates through the heavens. So, let’s always remember—or at least try our best—to show others that we love them deeply, just as God loves us.
