However, discovering a new recreational pursuit that works for you, can be quite a daunting task. Exploring new hobbies involves an understanding of your own interests, a desire to find things that grab your curiosity and the act of testing out new activities to determine what you like best. To support you, we’ve gathered up five simple tips to help you find your new hobby!
Start With a List
Brainstorm the things that make you happy, the broad topics or moments that bring you joy. Make a list of your interests and prioritize the ones that you feel the most passionate about. This will help narrow down your options and give you a better idea of where to start when looking for new activities.
Carve Out Time
Finding a hobby takes time and effort. Schedule time in your calendar each week to work on your hobby. Whether it’s 30 minutes or 2 hours, make it a priority and stick to your schedule. It can be easy to push it off when something inevitably comes up, but when we make it a priority, it can help create a sense of routine and healthy discipline to make room for our personal time each week.
Ask Around
One of the best conversation starters is one where you let your peers talk about the things they love. Ask your family, friends and coworkers what they like to do. They may suggest new hobbies for you to try, give you insights on ones you’re considering or even participate with you. Finding common interests and even passions is an incredible way to connect with others.
Jump In!
It’s time to start exploring! Let yourself try new things, and explore activities and topics you’re not familiar with. Everyone starts somewhere. It’s ok to be less knowledgeable or comfortable in your hobby than others are. That’s what hobbies are for! A space for you to find joy without any requirements or deadlines. Plus you never know what you might end up enjoying. So, if something seems even slightly interesting, jump in!
Perfection Is Not the Goal
Once you start to try new things it can be easy to get discouraged when you’re not very good. But let me tell you right now, friend, perfection is not the goal. Most of the time we tend to compare ourselves, unfairly, to people much more experienced and knowledgeable in our hobby. What good does that do? Let yourself move at your own pace, you will grow and learn with time. Don’t set unrealistic expectations for yourself, take it slow and enjoy the learning opportunities that come!
Remember, finding a hobby is all about exploring your passions and having fun. With just a few directed thoughts, you’ll be well on your way to finding a hobby that brings you joy and peace.
