Scripture
“As Jesus and His disciples were on their way, He came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to Him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what He said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to Him and asked, ‘Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!’ 41 ‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.’” Luke 10:38-42 (NIV)

What drum determines the tempo at which you march through life? Do you fall in step with the world’s beat, marching toward a life full of meetings and practices and non-stop busyness? Or do you march to the drum of the Lord, finding great joy during moments in His presence?

The world’s drum sounds so much louder at times. When your girlfriend complains about baseball practice and soccer practice and piano lessons and ballet classes and her morning workouts and… How can lies disguised as mom guilt not kick in? Your kid can’t play an instrument. You haven’t worked out since who knows when. Kick it into high gear, girl! Sign your kids up for three more sports, buy a keyboard and hire a live-in personal trainer. You’re falling behind!

Or instead, listen to the thumping of the Spirit inside of you. Pick up your Bible, grab a cup of coffee and let your kids eat the sugary cereal that maybe shouldn’t be considered “breakfast.” Sit together and read the promises of our God. Pray together for a world consumed with itself and oblivious to the kingdom that is coming.

It can be hard to hear the Lord calling you in, so it’s no surprise we fall victim to the busyness of a broken world. Like Martha, we are scrambling to be better and do more, but it’s time to be more like Mary. It’s time to choose Christ over this world and cling to what can never be taken from us: His love.
