A new box of crayons is the best, right? The lid opens, and you can smell the artistic possibilities. Here comes the best part: they’re in tidy, organized rows and perfectly sharpened. Isn’t that a beautiful sight? Now, it’s decision time. What color do you choose? Blue-green? Green-blue? Bluish-greenish? So many choices! You finally select the perfect color. All is well…until the crayon breaks. The crayon is ruined, your artwork will never be as intended and you’re mad because it’s no longer perfect: it’s broken.
When we are broken, God can step in and restore us. The Holy Spirit can fill the holes in our hearts with love and light. The pain in our souls can cease when we cling to the promise of a new day. When we feel like we have nothing left to give or receive, God overflows our cups with joy. He uses broken hearts, shattered souls and unfulfilled promises to demonstrate we are never beyond being used to fulfill His purposes. Jesus is the ultimate example of that. His sacrifice—His brokenness—on the cross resulted in our reconciliation with God.
Sometimes, our biggest failures, regrets and mistakes can become avenues for God to work miracles. Our brokenness can be turned into beauty—a mess into the ultimate masterpiece. Our lives are a canvas for God to create scenes of redemption and transformation. Let your heart not be troubled, sister, because broken crayons can still color and you can still make beautiful things.
