Scripture
“If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and He will deliver us. 18 But even if He does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” Daniel 3:17-18 (NIV)

What courage Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego possessed. To stand at the throne of Babylon’s king and practically taunt him to throw them into a blazing furnace. Their confidence in God’s deliverance is inspiring. “The God we serve is able to deliver us.” They knew how deep God’s power ran, but what comes next is even more striking.

“Even if He does not.” God didn’t “owe” them. They were so devoted to standing in accordance with His commandments, they were willing to die, even if He didn’t provide deliverance. They refused to worship a statue, knowing it went against the commandments set before them. Even if He didn’t deliver them from the blaze, they were going to stand by their God.

Are you willing to walk into the fire, even if God won’t deliver you? Are you willing to stand up to unjust rules, even if you lose? Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego knew God had the power to rescue them, but they also knew they had no right to demand an outcome from Him. These three men were willing to stand up for what they believed in and willfully accept whatever consequences it bore. Were they scared? Definitely. But their devotion to God’s plan was greater than their fear.
