When life feels unstable, our natural instinct is to run—run to comfort, distraction, avoidance or control. In Psalm 11, David is told to flee, to escape the threats closing in around him. But instead of running for cover, he makes a bold declaration: “In the Lord I take refuge.”
It’s not that David is unaware of danger—he’s just more aware of who God is.
Can you relate? Maybe your mountain is the urge to shut down emotionally, to withdraw from people or to bury yourself in busyness. Maybe it’s reaching for control in the chaos or pretending you’re fine when you’re anything but.
David’s words offer another way.
Refuge in God isn’t about escape—it’s about presence. It’s choosing to stay rooted when everything says run. It’s whispering, “God, I trust You,” even when you don’t have all the answers. It’s believing that your safety isn’t found in your circumstances changing, but in knowing the One who never does.
So today, take stock. When stress rises or fear creeps in, where do you run first? What would it look like to pause, breathe and say, “In You, Lord, I take refuge”?
God doesn’t promise to remove every storm. But He promises to be your shelter in the middle of it.
You don’t have to flee like a bird—you can stay grounded in peace, anchored in the presence of the One who holds you steady.
