Scripture
“But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:20-21 (NIV)

We love things that last.

The favorite cardigan you’ve had for years.
A bottomless carton of ice cream.
That killer ring you inherited from your grandmother.

Sadly, those things don’t endure forever, especially that ice cream carton—if only!

What lasts beyond our time here on earth are the treasures we store in Heaven. They last longer than any teacup collection or a plethora of shoes ever could. They won’t become lost in a move, get left behind on vacation or be taken from us.

The things we collect should not consume us to the point that we build our lives around them or idolize them. Taking inventory of our hearts is a great starting point for understanding what we value. The precious pieces we should be collecting include keeping God’s commandments, being merciful, loving those who get our dander up, giving our time and talents to those in need, choosing wisdom rather than overreacting and shining brightly in a world that so desperately needs it.

As followers of Jesus, what we prize and hold dear shouldn’t be endless social media followers or the latest tech gadget. Remember, those things stay behind when we exhale for the final time. Rather than be distracted by fads and fleeting fancies, we should fixate on pursuing God.
