Scripture
“One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message. When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. ‘If you consider me a believer in the Lord,’ she said, ‘come and stay at my house.’ And she persuaded us.” Acts 16:14-15 (NIV)

Lydia was a woman much like many of us today. She had a 9-to-5 gig, a family requiring her attention, she participated in Bible study and was the consummate hostess. She might have given Martha Stewart pause with all the irons she had in the fire. Yet once Lydia found God, and went on a mission for Him, her desire to serve others ramped up a few notches.

God bestows us all with gifts and talents we can use to honor Him. For Lydia, that meant entertaining the preachers passing through town. Paul and Silas didn’t have the luxury of an Airbnb. They were simply two men—strangers—preaching the message of hope and salvation through the one true Messiah.

Perhaps she hadn’t done dishes all week. Maybe her throw rugs were dusty. We’ll never know. What we do know is that Lydia opened her home to these missionaries, who felt so comfortable with her, they visited one more time after their imprisonment.

Being the perfect hostess is not always about a perfect home or well-cooked meal. What matters is your servant’s heart.
