Scripture
“So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head. 8 Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes. 9 His wife said to him, ‘Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!’ 10 He replied, ‘You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble...’” Job 2:7-10 (NIV)

You know the saying, “Not my circus. Not my monkeys.” That’s the point Job’s wife was making when it came to his afflictions because his circus was her circus too.

When we carefully place dominoes upright only to watch them cascade into one another, it’s obvious to see the effect. One falls, then knocks over another and so on until the last domino caught up in the ripple-effect falls. God allowed Satan to test Job. And this is where we see his wife—his family—caught up in the ripples and waves of his persecution. They’ve had it up to here and just want peace to return to their lives, no matter what.

Can you relate to being so unhappy with circumstances not of your own making that God’s fallen off your favorite list of people?

In these moments, remember that God calls us to consider the lilies of the field. Even though they toil and spin when the winds sweep them this way and that way, they know God cares for them. They’re firmly rooted and securely planted. When the anxieties of life find you, remember to cast your cares on God and stand firm in the truth.
