- The book of Job takes us on a journey through suffering and lament—one that is extreme in every way. Join us as we explore the book of Job chapter by chapter, and ask yourself what it might look like to continue to include God in all the wild seasons of your life. We’ll cover a new chapter every week, so read along!
As we step into Job 4, we’re introduced to Eliphaz, one of Job’s friends. He starts by reminding Job of his past deeds and how he’s instructed and supported many. “Your words have supported those who stumbled; you have strengthened faltering knees.” But then, Eliphaz questions Job, hinting that perhaps his suffering is a result of wrongdoing.
This chapter makes us think, doesn’t it? It’s about the support we give and receive during tough times. We’ve all been there—either offering a shoulder to lean on or needing one ourselves. And sometimes, like Eliphaz, we might struggle to find the right words. We want to comfort, but we also seek to understand, and in that process, we might unintentionally say something that’s not as helpful as we intended.
Eliphaz’s question in verse 17 is a stark reminder of our human limitations. It doesn’t diminish our value or worth, but it puts our place in the grand scheme of things into perspective. We are beloved creations of God, but we are not the Creator. Our understanding, righteousness and purity are not on the same level as God’s.
It’s an invitation to be humble, to trust and to surrender. It’s about recognizing that there are things beyond our comprehension, and that’s okay. It’s about trusting that God’s ways, righteousness and purity are perfect, even when they don’t align with our limited understanding.
So today, let’s think about how we support each other. Are we listening with open hearts? Are we speaking with love and empathy? And when we’re struggling, are we open to hearing words that might challenge us while still holding onto our faith?
Remember, we’re all walking this journey together—with its ups and downs, joys and challenges. Let’s be there for each other with compassion, understanding and a listening ear.
