A boy stands upon a battlefield holding only a slingshot and a small stone. He begged his king for the opportunity to take down the foes of his people by facing their best fighter one-on-one. It’s one thing to see David summon his courage and wield his faith as he faced Goliath. It’s quite another to consider how he pulled it off while surrounded by Philistines jeering and mocking the tiny warrior.
David’s confidence isn’t to say that fear wasn’t a factor. It had to have been on some level, considering his mission. But he knew the only way to face fear is to step out in faith. David trusted that no matter the boos he heard or the battle’s outcome, God was for him. When God is for us, who could possibly stand against us?
God knows the giants you face. He’s at the ready to help you battle them just as he did for a young man who faced down a giant long ago.
