Scripture
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)

Fear can be a tricky thing. Think of your childhood. Scare tactics were used to keep you away from drugs, keep you out of strangers’ cars and were wielded by your parents (or maybe siblings) when you didn’t want to follow along with their plans. But what happens when we grow up and fear still rules our actions?

There’s a difference between discernment and fear. Discernment tells you that using illicit drugs falls outside of God’s will. Discernment tells you when a situation feels suspicious and it’s in your best interest to leave. It’s a gift from the Holy Spirit, and it’s that inner voice whose whisper we should obey.

Fear, however, is a tactic of the devil. It mimics discernment. It’s also a small voice inside your head, telling you to do this or avoid that or just stay inside. The difference lies in prayer.

Discernment comes from a relationship with Christ. When we can go to Him in prayer during a moment of uncertainty, surrender the problem at His feet and ask for guidance, He grants us peace. The devil isn’t so kind. He’ll keep you from turning to God, telling you to take control of the situation. The devil will leave you feeling dismayed, weak and lonely.

So, step away from the spirit of fear, which does not come from our Heavenly Father. Instead, approach His throne in prayer and walk confidently in your journey. He will hold you with His righteous right hand all of your days.
