Scripture
“‘Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them—and that you will save us from death.’” Joshua 2:12-13 (NIV)

That’s a big ask in the verses above, isn’t it? When you consider that those words are coming from a woman who’s a prostitute, it may give you pause and have you wondering why mercy and grace should be sent her way.

Rahab is a woman with a day job of spending time with men for money. Joshua has assigned two men to spy on the city of Jericho, and they take shelter in Rahab’s home. Perhaps they were there for business, pleasure, or thought it would be genius to hide in a home least likely to be suspected. No matter the reason, Rahab protected them, and God kept them from harm. In return, Rahab and her family were spared as the rest of the city fell to ruins.

Rahab was imperfect just as we all are. Yet these verses in Joshua beautifully depict the image of God’s amazing and saving grace from the destruction that awaits us all. Not only did God utilize her—He saved her. After Jericho was destroyed, she went on to live among the Israelites and her name is listed in the lineage of Jesus.

No sin is too great for God not to step in and use it in a mighty way. He turns lives around. No one is damaged beyond repair, and all are meant to have a purpose-filled life with God.
