Scripture
“Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” Proverbs 16:24 (NIV)

If the kind and loving words we speak over others heal the soul, what kind of pain, rejection and negativity do harsh words inflict?

Words can potentially bless others or tear them down faster than a wrecking ball. Once they are spoken, we cannot shove them back from whence they came. That’s why controlling our tongues—our thoughts—is a great start. Sharing words that encourage and comfort others changes our attitudes and builds up those around us. God’s Word shows us the strength our speech can wield. Our language can be used to move mountains or cause pain. It allows us to cry out for help or lend inspiration. Is what you say used to glorify God and provide sweetness to the soul?

Developing our own self-esteem is essential too, so take a moment to note the words you say to yourself. How is your self-talk working out for you these days? Is the tone and content of your voice healing like a sweet honeycomb or like barbs that pierce your heart repeatedly?

If you don’t have anything nice to say––well, you know how the rest of that quote goes, so use your words in the best way possible. Allow your voice to spread goodness and grace like a healing honeycomb that can influence others in the most positive of ways. Remember, wise words are a well to draw upon and pour onto ourselves and others, and we can return to Him for refills for the rest of our days.
