Scripture
“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, (14) I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14 (NIV)

Hindsight is 20/20. Sometimes when we look to the past, we armchair quarterback how we would play that through differently if faced with the same circumstances today.

“I never should have gone to that party.”

“Why didn’t I keep my lip zipped?”

“If I could go back in time and chat with my younger self…”

That’s a lot of regret, and it’s only three sentences worth. We could continue adding to the list and filling in more of the blanks of what we’d do differently.

God doesn’t want us to keep looking back on our lives with regret, shame or discouragement, though. Our minds would boil over with sins of the past or missed opportunities. It’s one thing to realize the time has arrived to ask for forgiveness and make amends. It’s another to play it over and over in your head with the intent of persecuting yourself.

God wants us focused forward. To forget about our yesterdays and live in the here and now. Press on and reach the goals set before you. Turn away from what’s behind you and who you were yesterday. It’s time to steady on straight ahead.
