Scripture
“When Abigail saw David, she quickly got off her donkey and bowed down before David with her face to the ground. She fell at his feet and said: ‘Pardon your servant, my lord, and let me speak to you; hear what your servant has to say. Please pay no attention, my lord, to that wicked man Nabal. He is just like his name—his name means Fool, and folly goes with him. And as for me, your servant, I did not see the men my lord sent.’” 1 Samuel 25:23-25 (NIV)

Sometimes we just can’t stand back and watch any longer. And sometimes that call to action, to override a bad decision, includes standing up for what is right over siding with family.

Abigail was married to Nabal. Maybe he was a catch when you looked at the wealth and success on his resume, but the reality in scripture paints a different picture. He was rude, insulting, greedy and stingy, had a bad temper, loved his wine and thought he was kind of a big deal. Before you think Abigail met him on eHarmony, remember this was a time of arranged marriages between families. He was perhaps not Abigail’s first choice or choice at all.

Abigail was filled with faith and showed character, wit and wisdom. She knew when it was time to override her husband’s irresponsible actions and do the right thing. Eventually, Nabal met his demise. Abigail went on to wed King David and be a positive influence during his reign.

This Godly woman demonstrates humility and courage. Abigail shows how circumstances can shape character and vice versa. Her marriage is an example of how Godly wisdom provides safety while haughtiness does not.
