Scripture
“Then Peter said, ‘Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.’” Acts 5:3-4 (NIV)

If you always tell the truth and stay away from the entrapment of lies, there’s no need to keep your story straight. That would have been a great lesson to learn for Ananias and his wife, Sapphira.

As believers, we’re called to give sacrificially. Whether it’s our time, talents or dollars, we give until we feel the “ouch” factor. This was especially true in the early days of the church. Christians wanted to get the word out and support missionaries and churches spreading the gospel. Many gave all, and Ananias and Sapphira watched their friends and neighbors do so with their very eyes. Instead of keeping their word and doing the same, this couple chose to tuck away some of their proceeds. Not only did they lie about it, but they also stole money intended for God.

It didn’t end well for either of them. When Peter confronted Ananias, he lied and dropped dead on the spot. Not long after, most likely standing where her husband did hours earlier, Sapphira also lied and died. She may have been only doing what her husband required of her: following through with his deception. Yet Sapphira missed the opportunity to speak truth and instead followed her husband into sin.

Sacrificially serving and giving is how God calls us to live. Reject the temptation to lie or withhold gifts and offerings. Always give your all.
